Behoort tot de familie van de Ranunculaceae. De Nederlandse benaming is 'winterakoniet'. Eranthis dankt zijn naam aan de Griekse woorden 'Er' (lente) en 'anthos' (bloem). Het is een zeer goede verwilderaar en brengt vroeg in het voorjaar de eerste kleur in de border of op de pot!
