Nectaroscordum behoort tot de familie Alliaceae. De naam verwijst naar het Grieks voor een uiachtige geur en het aantrekken van bijen (nectar). Het geslacht is nauw verwant aan het geslacht Allium en in de volksmond ook wel 'Allium siculum' genoemd.
